Description

This book is a 2008 facsimile copy of the 1932 second impression of Argonauts of the Western Pacific. The first edition was printed in 1922. I have no information about the printer of the facsimile copy apart from the ISBN number Originally published in 1922, this early work on anthropology is both expensive and hard to find in its first edition. It details the lives and customs of the Trobriand who live on an island chain in the western Pacific and is a highly regarded study of their tribal culture. This is a fascinating work and is thoroughly recommended for anyone interested in ethlogy. This fascinating book contains an account of native enterprise and adventure in the archipelagoes of Melanesian New Guinea, with five maps, sixty five illustrations, and two figures. The content of this book is derived from the author's personal experiences with the natives, watching them daily at work and at play, conversing with them in their own tongue, and deriving all his information from the surest sources. A unique insight in the the lives of the native inhabitants of this area, this volume will be of much utility to those with a keen interest in anthropology or Melanesian New Guinea, and it would make for a wonderful addition to any personal collection. The chapters of this book include: 'The Subject, Method, and Scope of this Inquiry', 'The Country and Inhabitants of the Kula District', 'The Natives of the Trobriand Islands', 'The Essentials of the Kula', 'Canoes and Sailing', 'The Ceremonial Building of a Waga', et cetera.
