Description

This book was researched, written and designed by people very familiar with the industry, and who have had a long association with the area. Historian Dr Marjorie Gilmore said that researching and writing the book was a labour of love as she grew up in the industry and later farmed tobacco. Bob Veness of Dimbulah who co-authored the book was part of the industry from childhood, later growing tobacco himself for many years. Xenia Toffanello, the graphic designer, also grew up on her parents' tobacco farm. This needed to be written to record the struggles and triumphs of farmers and their families throughout the life of the industry. It celebrates the unique community which developed around the industry, according to Marjorie Gilmore. This is a must have for anyone who has had an association with tobacco growing and an interest in the politics of North Queensland development.
