Tocal is a rural property on the Paterson River in the lower Hunter Valley of NSW and it was first settled by the wealthy young immigrant James Webber in 1822. This is the story of Tocal in that early period. It provides a window through which we can see the penal colony in action with its convicts and ticket-of-leave men.
